Yeah, that's IT2.14p2 (version says (c) 1995-1997), there are newer versions from 1998 (p3 and p4, I think) and even an unreleased one from 1999 (2.15 registered, I think). Here, have a look at this... ftp://modland.ziphoid.com/pub/software/trackers/DOS/Impulse%20Tracker/

Hmm... No, I don't particularly want to use an older version of Schism, especially because the resolution is only 640x480 and so shows up in the middle of my laptop screen without stretching.

For some reason the IT does stretch on my screen somewhat. I was using this version off pouet - http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=13366
Maybe it doesn't have the patch 3? I better look around and make sure I have the right version.

Reason is I might be writing a co-op with someone who uses Schism, and if I end up using old IT I need to make sure we can trade the file back and forth :)

It's entirely possible that older versions work without problems of course because they might use different APIs (I can recall Schism switching to a more modern method of retrieving the user's "home directory" under Windows, which might be related to this shell32 call), but that doesn't mean that you should use them. It also seems like you are using an old versions of Impulse Tracker, because Schism's example file should load just fine in IT2.14 patch 3 and later, I think. Impulse Tracker will always display "?.??" if an IT file uses a newer format revision than what that particular version of Impulse Tracker supports.

Sounds cool. I'll try it! Yeah it's 98SE. Interestingly, I tried an older version of Schism from the Woolyss page, and it worked fine. Although I couldn't get the demo file included with it to load in regular Impulse Tracker. It said "Impulse Tracker version ?.??"

Maybe. Try it? Schism Tracker is platform independent, it all depends on the tools used for compilation. If they don't make use of any Windows functions that are only available on later versions, they should in theory build code that runs on any Windows installation. And yes, Schism Tracker reads and writes IT files that are compatible with Impulse Tracker itself.

most certainly false, though it's sort of on hiatus until I have a job that gives me more free time (and stop filling up all of that free time with nine other things!)

schism is open source software, so it can never be "no longer developed", but merely dormant. at least one patch was posted on >>>/scdev/ just days ago, which at some point will get merged into the repository - when I have a day off that I'm not already putting toward catching up on accumulated days of lost sleep, out of town for some other obligation, or visiting family which I rarely see.

those other comments in that article do hurt slightly... :/

So Schism used to work flawlessly for me, I usually run it in full screen mode. But then for no reason it started freezing. So I figured out that I can go into ~/Library/SchismTracker/ and delete config* to force it to start up in windows mode. If I try to go into full screen it locks up and I have to Force Quit it.

I was running a 2010 build, and just now noticed there's a newer 20120115 build or something about a year old for Mac OS X. So I got that, same problem. So now I'm forced to run it in windows mode...

Anyone got any ideas how to resolve this? Also why no updates in a year? :(

I would like for there to be a "plug-in" option for samples. Not a whole fancy API architecture or anything really complicated. Here's how I imagine it. You select a sample, then go right to all the options, and there is an option called "Plug-In Launch" or whatever. When that is selected, the sample is exported into a specified location (temp directory), and an external application is called with a parameter with that exported file. Then I can manipulate the sample all I want, and simply click save. Then switch back to Schism, and when it receives focus back, it reloads that temp file into that same sample slot, and ta-da... we have a "plug-in" architecture. This can probably be coded in like 2 hours of work, max!! If you're drunk!

I'd do it, but I can't figure out how to compile Schism on Mac OS X 10.7.5 yet.. :( Or under Windows 8 :(.. haha..

p.s. setting up what program is called could be done via some simple text/ini/config file I guess... :)

It depends on how the patch was made, but the general idea is this:

cd some_dir

patch -p 0 < /path/to/patchfile.patch

cd main_source_dir

./configure

make

and then
make install
or whatever. (You can actually just do
./configure && make && make check && make install
and it will do its thing as long as no errors occur.)

The key is that you might have to cd into a different directory and/or use a different number for
p
.

For example if you look at the patch to fix volume envelopes from http://schismtracker.org/scdev/res/1551.html#1567 you see the first two lines read

--- sndmix.c 2012-04-13 01:26:58.733534622 +0400

Why Colors? is pretty good if you set the bottom-left color (pattern font color) to 42,41,33 (same as in Pine Colours) and the bottom-middle color (wave display) to something like 43,47,36. It's very much like Pine Colours this way but a little bluer.

It occurs to me that I've been using the "Pine Colours" palette configuration in Impulse Tracker and now Schism basically since I started tracking. Other colour settings look wrong to me, even the default. I also find most of the other predefined palettes pretty ugly and occasionally unusable.

This insight came about partly from playing around with sc's board look styles. I was using the default(?) of Headline for a while but recently I've switched to Mercury, which I think is a little nicer (and not too anime).

Anyone got any favourites?

Last suggestion for now is to just post-process all your tracks, using a HP filter and an aural exciter (free one at http://www.uv.es/~ruizcan/p_vst.htm , might be others) on all the lo-fi bits.

Trying to post a new thread on /hasty/ gives me a message that "A file is required to post a new thread". This is especially problematic in that there is no option to upload files, for new threads or replies.

Also I wouldn't worry about breaking up the old thread.

Well, what on earth died now?! Fixed the db inconsistency (MySQL is terrible) but now it just brings up a blank page instead of reloading after submitting a post. Otherwise it "works" so I'll look further into it later.

Okay, all the links should work now. If not, complain here.

The neat advantage of this is that with the config of the new board, the links for "last 50 posts" etc. actually work, which is nice for a big long thread like that one. I could also break the thread into multiple pieces, but I'm not sure where to split it. Each new round?
