Guitar samples for the compo might be cool. I'd prefer more interesting sounds (harmonics, mutes, some chords, other noises) as opposed to just a multi-sampled guitar. Going to be a while before they make it in though, I've got packs 4 through 6 basically ready.

I don't know about air-guitar samples, but send them if you want, I suspect they will compress well at least ;)

>What about mod? That should be allowed too (plus you SHOULD know about the mod format otherwise you should be ashamed of yourself)

What's mod, is that like a modplug-specific file or something?

;)

Sure, mods are fine if you want. I just figured s3m would be oldschool enough for anyone here.

>filesize stuff

the 2MB after compression is a pretty loose target. Given the size of the sample packs it would be pretty hard for people to break it unless they loaded many extra copies of some samples, or put extra long reverbs on everything, etc. Other compression formats are fine too if you have a preference, but if the issue is just shaving off a few kB, then it's really not that important.

Admittedly I almost never use this thing...

"it/xm/s3m formats only. No external plugins. (VST etc.)"

What about mod? That should be allowed too (plus you SHOULD know about the mod format otherwise you should be ashamed of yourself)

"Submissions should be kept to about 2 MB or less, after compression (zip/bz2)."

gz ~~ zip (they use the same compression); also, bz2 doesn't work well with binary files (it shows its true colours with text though).

If you were using 7zip I'd tell people to not use munch.py (or to modify it to not use IT214/215); however, DEFLATE (as used in zip and gz) tends to compress modules with IT214'd/215'd samples better than those with fully uncompressed samples.

(Also making it spam 0x00 bytes instead of "MUNCH*PY|" all over the file would work better.)

I don't know that I want to put it up earlier given what's going on IRL right now, but I could make the tracking period longer. Same difference?

Previously it's been 10 days (extensions notwithstanding), but I could push that to two weeks or longer. My main reluctance in giving people too much time to track is that a lot of people end up procrastinating a lot because they think they have a lot of time, and then the deadline comes up suddenly and then, "oops!", no entry. That's certainly how I tend to do things...

I'll do some kind of unofficial results in a few days.

Congrats 68k, a well deserved win. I'd still like to see the unoffical results, because I'm curious where tct1501 and Storleks tunes would have ended up.

To clarify, I really don't have any problems with the way you edited the samples. In fact, I thought it was very clever and creative, and it gave me some ideas on how to approach the next compo. For example, while tracking I felt a little confined by the drumloops, but by being able to edit them, chop them up, whatever , I would be able to overcome this problem and make a better track.

Is it possible to put the samplepack for the next compo a bitearlier? I don't have much opportunity to track these and having a little more time to finish a track would make it more likely for me to be able to enter the compo. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem ;)

I listened to your album. On the one hand it sounds pretty MIDI-ish, but you said you had mostly soundfonts to work with, so that's understandable. However as a result some of the tracks really remind me of mid-90s game soundtracks — Hexen comes to mind — that I really like. So on the whole I found it enjoyable. Track 3 in particular I think is great.

The musical ideas you've got here are pretty good for someone that doesn't know what they're doing, so hopefully you keep at it! There's a lot of complexity in some of these tracks. Try some more interesting samples maybe?

Also your music sounds nothing like I would expect from your cover art :P But that's ok.

Hi there!

I just want to point to some tracks I put on Jamendo recently - completely done with Schism Tracker. This way I want to express my gratitude for the Schism Tracker developers - thank you!

http://www.jamendo.com/de/album/105350

You know, many years ago I got to know Impulse Tracker and messed around a bit with it. I only intermittently created tracks, just for fun. After some years, when I had a small compilation of tracks, I unfortunately lost them and downhearted as I was, I stopped making music. Additionally, there was the period when Impulse Tracker wasn't available any more due to incompatibility with new operating systems.

Then Schism Tracker was released and I was motivated to revisit making tracks. As previously, it was less than a hobby, requiring leisure more than time. Also, I often made small tracks I never finished. This album is the entirety of those tracks, which were neither lost nor withdrew themselves from completion. Btw, the first track was the soundtrack for a very small game my brother programmed.

Comment too long; full version here.

Some notes about voting:

Scores will be normalized for each person's votes, against the highest scoring track. As a quick example, that means voting tracks 1/2/3/4/5 is essentially the same as voting 2/4/6/8/10. I had meant to write this somewhere but it got edited out somehow?

I don't know if I will release the actual scores or not. Always afraid about being too discouraging.

If you want, you can just send a list of tracks in best-to-worst order like the old voting style, because it's easy to convert that into a numeric format.

I have no idea how the compilation actually works, but according to a couple reports I've gotten it is possible. In my experience it's fairly easy to build with a *nix environment under ssh with remote mount of the folder you're working in, so you can run
make
and then double click on the .exe... but that takes two computers (or a VM of some sort)

Well, the outdated version of Schism Tracker that I originally had, dating back to 2008, has finally caught up to me. The effect column memory was a big fail on my end, so I patched my entry up. That might have been a side effect I have been unaware of for some years... and I'll have to check, but I don't think the latest supported version of Schism Tracker works on my Mac.

However, I'm giving the Mac version bragging rights at the moment. This laptop is missing a numpad keyset, making tracking more of a hassle. Plus... for the Fx keys, you have to hold down the Fn key.

I don't think so... actually, I'm not sure if it's the capacitors. They're a bit bulged, but don't appear to be blown, and they've been like that for at least a few months since I had to switch from another G5. The other G5 suffered from a fatal graphical error that although it permitted the computer to start up, it would fail once it got past the Apple logo.

Well crap.

Though I can compile the Windows build, it crashes at startup (under my crappy Win2k VBox installation) for reasons that I can't figure out. I can't build the Wii version at all, because it suddenly complains that "C compiler cannot create executables", even though I didn't touch it since the last time it was working.

I'm fairly sure that not very many people are going to care about the Wii build in the first place so I'm just dropping support for it. For Windows, I have no idea. I even tried rebuilding 20110101 and it crashes, so something retarded happened.

At least the Mac build seems to work.

SDCompo Round 64 has begun!

SDCompo is a monthly online multi-format module competition. It is an opportunity for you to compete against trackers from around the world, share and receive feedback on songs and hone your tracking skills!

Check it out at http://www.sdcompo.com/

Entry Deadline for Round 64 is 2012 January 27 00:00:00 *CST

This round's samplepack is provided by chunter who sampled from his Korg Monotron.
Vocal samples are also accepted.

Yes, the compo is still around :) Going on 6 years! We've been a bit quiet lately as far as promoting the compo, but we've got a lot of interesting changes planned for the coming year. Cralias is working hard on a site redesign, which will allow for more flexibility such as smoother integration with social media sites, and the possibility of "sub-compos" which can be hosted by users themselves. These will run concurrently with the main compo, and will give competitors more freedom to experiment with different sets of rules and limitations.

Why? Why not! This seems like a lot of work but it actually only takes a moment if you're quick.

Initialize instrument mode and turn stereo off.

Go to the sample screen, press Alt-Y. Enter zzzzzzzzzzzzzz (give or take a few z's) as your string. Create the instrument.

Set the sample's global volume to 0, for the time being; this is a pure DC wave and playing it can actually damage your speakers/headphones if you're unlucky. Use Alt-E to resize it to 1000 samples or so, to beat interpolation. Set a forward loop between samples 400-600.

Use the volume envelope to draw the wave you want. You should probably either loop it, or add an extra point at the end with 0 volume.

Put a note down on pattern 0.

Turn the sample's global volume up. Move to a blank sample.

Go back to the pattern editor and press Ctrl-O to write the pattern to a sample.

Centralize the new sample, amplify it, trim it (take off the first 100 bytes or so, plus whatever else from the end), and resize it down to a sane size, probably 100-1000 bytes.

Put the sample rate back up, loop it, and start playing!
