Bass expansion, quick-play bug, 2x note/preview, non-multichannel mode (6)

The following issues are related to the Schism Tracker version of 17-08-2009.
I have recently updated from a version of 10-03-2008.

  1. Question; Bass expansion

Where did the Bass expansion feature go? (also like Reverb etc)
Is it still available but hidden somewhere?

This question applies to the Schism Tracker version of 17-08-2009.

2. Bug; 4/8 quick-play

While editing a pattern,
pressing '4' or '8' to play the note under cursor or the entire row,
it plays the/all note(s) at the completely wrong frequency (oO),
sometimes extremely low and sometimes extremely high.
This is important for me because it allows me
to input/change ideas in(to) schism tracker in a matter of seconds.

Actually, most samples that sound 'the same' at first 'glance',
are actually slightly off,
but this is only noticeable by a sharp ear.

It has worked perfectly in the version of 10-03-2008.
Here is an example track that contains samples which shows this behavior:
http://www.bettiesart.com/tc/temp/freesleeves_DEBUG%20(11%20Dec%202009%202223%20-%201).rar
Use Shift-F9 to see the problem in action.

When I tried to minimize the samples in this track,
the problem mysteriously went away,
which leads me to believe that an incorrect offset is used (like 'x-1')
(sample/instrument number/offset)
in the quick-play routine (4/8)
to obtain the right play-frequency.
So I think that it uses the wrong sample (previous/next perhaps)
to get the frequency for the sample to be quick-played.

3. Annoyance; Double instrument note/preview

When on the instrument page,
and you test-play using the computer keyboard,
when first switching to a new instrument,
and pressing (and holding) a note,
it will play it twice in succession (!),
which seems like some kind of repeat-delay bug?

This issue applies to all Schism Tracker versions
that I have used so far,
and does not occur in Impulse Tracker.

4. Compatibility; Disabled multi-channel mode

Also on the instrument page;
The way normal (non-multichannel) playback worked in Impulse Tracker was:
When u press 2 (or more) notes (on the computer keyboard),
it does play those 2 (or more) notes simultaneously,
but without constantly increasing the tracknumber,
which happens with multichannel playback (Alt-N) correctly.

In Schism Tracker I am not able
to play more than 1 note simultaneously
when multi-channel mode is disabled.
Maybe it works when using a MIDI keyboard (also in IT),
but that defeats the purpose of using this program for me ^^.

This issue applies to all Schism Tracker versions
that I have used so far.

I would like to say Thank You once again for creating Schism Tracker,
opening a window of opportunity to work with music from the past
in modern day operating environments,
and to input ideas at an unprecedented speed :D

Those DSP effects are gone and will not come back, and were stripped out after a quite heated debate on irc. Adjust the equalizer appropriately for your soundcard and speakers. though I do wonder why it's not possible to attenuate frequency bands with it :/

I plan to add chorus/reverb "eventually" as a channel effect via Zxx, in the same way that filters currently work. (Configuring an external reverb unit via midi is mentioned in passing in MIDI.TXT as an example of something "else" you can do with Zxx.)

> 4/8 quick-play

Should be fixed, mostly. I bet you were using a multisampled instrument with a nonlinear note/sample mapping, because that was totally broken.
Note playback is still kind of flaky, especially the volume column data that's not associated with a note, but it should be much better in the current build. (which I am working on putting up at the moment, because it's been way too long)

> Double instrument note/preview

Can't replicate. Maybe it was fixed and I never noticed it?

> 2 (or more) notes (on the computer keyboard)

Known. Hard to fix sanely.

Thanks for taking the time to fix it! :)

They were leftovers from modplug, which was half through the process of being completely rewritten at the time anyway - or at least "translated" from C++ to good old standard C (which i still kind of feel bad for not helping out :/ :\ i could have -at least- done a minimal effort....)

(modplug was the library that "originally" provided the playback functionality of Schism Tracker, at least to the best of its ability at the time)

btw, anyone still have logs (or just the approx. datetime) of that IRC "debate"? iirc the most obvious reason why it was so "heated" was due to the unusually high amounts of alcohol and/or^H^H^H illicit substance(s) absorbed by esa/distance shortly prior to aforementioned debate...? or was that entirely another "debate" of its own? :D

I was referring to the argument on #mod_shrine about a particular Necros song, which is completely unrelated to whatever you're talking about. And I'm not going to drop names of those involved.
