Here's round 15. It's a relatively big pack in terms of both filesize and number of samples. There's a lot of stereo samples here, that haven't been split up; I will upload a split pack on request.
The rules have been updated, mainly as per http://schismtracker.org/hasty/read/959 . In particular all submissions must include both a module and an MP3/OGG render. The text file has been updated but the rules on the website haven't been, yet. I'll get to it soon.
http://compo.quikphix.org/15/hc15samp.zip
enjoy!
Bet your bottom dollar?
Clear away the cobwebs and the sorrow????
Tomorrow, you're only two days away...... ???? :)
Anybody heard from +- in the past few days??? I'm getting a little concerned
nvm, i heard from him :)
Urgh, sorry guys. They'll be up sometime soon.
Well +-, I think you definitely deserve a break after this round. No rush to get to round 16, but I will definitely be entering when it does come around :)
At long last, an update. Sorry it took so long but things have been happening and I have been tired.
I'm pushing the next one to June 7th, which should give me enough time to deal with and recover from The Month of Many Things that is May. Hopefully by then, there will be some renewed interest.
In the meantime, I'm still hoping for samples for round 17, so that should give you plenty of time to get some ready.
Thanks for all your hard work 68k.
>I'm still trying to work out why there are so many long chains of amplifier modules hooked up to the various samplers in your SunVox ensemble.
^ The reason for all the amplifiers is to create distortion. It only overloads on Sunvox_lofi or the Mobile version of Sunvox (13 bit)... So if you listened on the regular .exe, the song won't sound right. If this is the case, please check out the mp3 or run it in sunvox_lofi :)
Is there interest in doing another sample pack with contributions from everyone again, like with round 7 8?
The idea would be essentially the same though the sample requirements might different a little. Or not?
It would probably be for HC17. 15 is all queued up and 16 might be another chip-round (or something similar anyhow).
Here was the thing from the first one: http://compo.quikphix.org/08/hc08info.txt
Interest? Yes. I think perhaps make the requirements a little easier to fulfill / be a bit more flexible with regards to the requirements. Just keep it simple.
Also, I would appreciate it if melodic samples are tuned to a C.
I can tune the samples myself as long as I get them in time. Well, as good as they're normally tuned anyhow :P
Simplified requirements can be done. Which ones did you find too hard/strict?
I don't think there's one that's particularly too hard or strict, but the whole set of them might be somewhat difficult to fulfill for some. Some might not be able to record stuff, others perhaps aren't as adept with sample editing, others might have a hard time finding their older modules, etc.
Perhaps it would be fine to say: "OK, just give me seven samples that aren't just simply ripped from a sample pack, but are in some ways created/or edited by you. Also, you may enter samples that are from CC sources, or from one of your earliest modules. At least one sample has to be percussive, and at least sample one has to be melodic."
Just throwing out some ideas ;)
OK, tentative guidelines.
Send me between 3 and 8 samples. They have to fulfill these conditions:
Take them from other modules, make them, rip them from CDs, download them from samplepacks, whatever. Anything is fine.
Oh, except no samples that come directly from previous HC packs!
Sounds good. This sounds like a good opportunity to use my Zoom digital recorder to do some field recordings :)
>>8 Nice!
BTW if anyone ever feels like submitting a sample pack, they are welcome to do so. I certainly don't need it; I've got packs planned out until at least HC20. But if you want to try using a specific kind of sample pack, know that you have the power to take matters into your own hands. ;)
OK, here's the official guidelines. I'll post it to the website tomorrow.
I've got a few ideas I'd maybe like to implement in HastyCompo. All of this is up for debate and I'm very interested on hearing opinions from people. I like to type more than necessary, but here's a TL;DR:
Barring any strong objections we can try this for the next round and see if it causes problems for anyone.
MP3s/OGGs
MP3 or OGG renders for "traditional" tracker formats, it/xm/s3m/etc., could either be allowed or required. There have been a few times where the player (Schism vs XMPlay etc.) or the player's settings (interpolation or not) have mattered, and this would ensure that songs could be heard as the composer intended. It also makes it easier for people to listen to songs on phones and similar devices.
I feel the art of being clever within patterns is kind of lost to a lot of modern tracker users... but then effects and things make this not so important to know anyhow? I don't know. I like limited systems where you need some cleverness to accomplish elaborate tasks, in general. I think it promotes creativity and usually encourages lower resource use. But I know not everyone feels the same way.
I'm somewhat uncomfortable with compos that accept mp3 renders for a couple of different reasons. #1 being it puts an emphasis on the render quality instead of the tracking, so people who don't have experience doing "pro" stuff are at a disadvantage. #2 it de-emphasizes tracking which seems like exactly what this compo is about... I'm reminded of similar discussions years back, which led to Tracked Worx 2000's no-render requirement.
>>10 Hmm, can you elaborate a bit? MP3 renders are meant to be exactly the output from your tracker, no mastering or post-processing or anything, and you still need to submit the tracked module as well. So I'm not sure I follow how that would emphasize anything but tracking skill. Currently in SunVox the rule is that you can't even normalize the output, it needs to go straight from diskwriter to MP3 encoder to emailed submission.
The brief amount of text I could find about TW2k right now suggested that "no renders" was a decision against MP3-only releases, which I absolutely would not ever accept.
Yeh... The mp3 stuff is for people like me who never open the modules, it would be awesome to be able to listen to all the songs in the same program, instead of some in an IT player and some in an mp3 player. On the desktop XMplay supports both, but I haven't found anything on Android yet which can.
I don't need to see the module to tell if somebody has tracking skill :) The music and sounds speak for themselves. If I'm reeaaally curious about how something is done I'll open the module, but generally I try not to do that, partially because I want to develop my own style and not feel like "I copied that trick from someone else"
PS, that TW2k looks pretty cool, I wonder if there is a place to get a copy still?
But: also, if I'm in the minority (or the only one?) who wants mp3, I don't want that to be irritating to others, so in that case I can just deal with the fact that I'll have to use a mod player. No big deal :)
and actually (last post I promise, sorry), I'd rather have an "uncompressed" module than some crap 128k mp3, I think if there is an mp3 requirement there should be a minimum bitrate of at least 192kbps
>>12 MP3 is not only for your laziness :) It ensures that composer intent will be preserved.
>>13 Don't know if you can still order it but http://www.maz-sound.com/index.php?show=product&id=8
>>14 Other people have suggested or inquired about it.
>>15 128 VBR isn't too bad with Lame. But I can recommend people use higher rates. Don't think we need 320 or flac though.
>>12 Again
> generally I try not to do that, partially because I want to develop my own style and not feel like "I copied that trick from someone else"
I really disagree with this mode of thinking! Not trying to tell you what to do but I think it's fine to learn production techniques etc. from other people and even copy them directly. You learn faster that way and that lets you develop your own style by building on the tricks you've learned.
Let's get this party started:
http://compo.quikphix.org/14/hc14samp.zip
No one said anything about stereo samples in round 12, so this pack has a few samples split into separate files for the left and right channels. Future packs might do something different.
Entries due March 11.
cubic player!
Heh, what about Inertia player? That was the first player I ever used to use, even before our PC had a soundcard. We had a mini tower case and my dad built a wooden platform for it so you could hear the PC speaker better... I would lay on the floor listening to mods.... ahh the good old days :)
ocp play sid files and looks good. what else to say.. ?
There is a bug in my song at order 0F h (pattern 04 h). The global volume drops to V5E in impulse terms, G2F in ft2, 1:20 in minutes. Please remove it from channel 1. I consider this human error no cheating, just drunk :P
>>35
Ooh! Inertia Player was one of my favorites.
>>36 That's a minor enough change that I will replace your file in the votepack with a corrected one, if you want to send me one.
I'm not going to vote this time, but I did listen to all the entries and I think they are all pretty close.
Going to wait a day or two more for results since I'm still missing some. Next round starts on the 29th.
pow!
Got some topics I want to inquire about so watch this space!
One already up at http://schismtracker.org/hasty/read/953
Samplepack 13 is up.
http://compo.quikphix.org/13/hc13samp.zip
This round is a "chiptune-like" round, and has the following extra rules:
ROUND-SPECIFIC RULE CHANGES
===========================
.mod is kinda featureless, i think, so you will be on disadvantage here.
Also, schismtracker adds some clicks to .mod samples, like in this track from an awesome musicdisk. No clicks in milkytracker and musicdisk's player (libbass, i think). From what I understand, it looks like schism replaces last byte of sample with 00 when loading.
I probably should repost it in /sc/.
>>77 Are you playing without interpolation? Schism does weird things with loops that go to the end of the sample when interpolation is on. But without it sounds OK to me.
>>77 And even just moving both loop points back 1 sample helps too.
Ekorren, your song was off the chain my man.
@io, if I enter the next one, it is likely I'll also be venturing into a different tracker. SunVox doesn't seem to want to function on my computer anymore for some reason. but, I welcome the opportunity to play around in some new software.
>>78
Oh, so it's known bug. No need to report then.
Hey CGA, that's weird. If you wanna email me personally I can try to see if I can offer advice to get it working again. Or you could always post a thread on Sunvox forums and I bet Nightradio can get it back up in no time.
What were you thinking of trying out? For Hasty I'd recommend either Schism or Milky. But for "general purpose" I would say you should try out Renoise and/or Psycle if you haven't already :) Psycle will be more similar to Sunvox. Renoise is in general the most polished and professional tracker, but doesn't have the modularity of Sunvox
I guess I'm unusual in that I'm comfortable with whatever program I use. I was "raised" on Impulse Tracker, so I always feel "at home" with it, but I love Renoise, Sunvox. Milkytracker doesn't phase me, although I don't 100% love it it's OK. Still really haven't spent much time yet with Psycle but I'm looking forward to trying it out.
I think for now I'll just let SunVox be. I started working with Schism and I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I did try out Psycle for a little while but couldn't get into it. I'll definitely give it another go though.
I tried to learn MilkyTracker once but I could never find any good tutorials! I was spoiled with SolarLune's sunvox videos.
Psycle is pretty cool, though I never managed to get a full song down with it. I don't think VSTs are my thing really.
>>84 Give OpenMPT a try too if you're shopping for new trackers, I personally feel the interface is pretty ugly but some people prefer the Windows-like UI to the Dos-like one of Schism.
I did try OpenMPT for a little bit, but I couldn't quite get into it. I'd have to agree with you on the interface. I'm starting to really like Schism. It has way more features than I originally thought it had. It's taking some getting used to of course, but I'm getting there.
For a variety of reasons, I'm starting round 12 now, a little early. Deadline is January 2nd, which is a little under 3 weeks, because I hear some people like to do things on the 1st.
Samplepack here: http://compo.quikphix.org/12/hc12samp.zip
This pack has a number of stereo files, which I have generally avoided in the past. Schism has a bug that affects loading only one channel of a stereo sample. As such I've also put up a mono samplepack which has all the stereo samples in the main pack split up into left/right/L+R mono samples. Samples in the main pack that were mono are not in this second pack.
Mono pack: http://compo.quikphix.org/12/hc12mono.zip
Let me know what you think of having more stereo samples, and the best way to include them in a pack - I debated just putting in the separated L/R files, but sometimes it's nicer to work with a single stereo file instead of two separate mono ones.
>>33 If you don't fill in a name, you get a random "anonymous" one. Except on this board you also get an ID (ODonW3nd) that stays the same in at least each thread, I think?
Results will be posted soon.
lol yeah, those anonymous names threw me off for a while at first.
loves you!
HAHAH Did I say soon? I meant, "eventually." I've been sleeping all day a lot. Will get it done tomorrow.
Next round will start Jan 25th.
>>32 Wow, finally listened to that, I love it. Kickass! Thanks for doing/posting it!
The results file displays a different score than the compo.quikphix site (.666 and .333 vs .75 and .25). Not that it matters, but still, I like for things to be correct, you know ;)
Hope to get something going for the next round!
Ooops I see what you mean. Yeah I changed the ratio :)
I also forgot to put the round number in the results file (ROUND xx), not going to bother updating that here tho.
Wow, the 25th seemed so far away, but now it is tomorrow. Perhaps I'll put something together :)
I'm starting to put together some sample packs. Which ones were your favourites? Which ones didn't you like? And why, if you can answer that.
Personally I like 6 and 10 quite a lot, those are just the kind of sounds I like to use. 9 was cool but only a small subset of those samples got used, despite such a large pack. And I think I like the votepack for 4 the best. I didn't dislike any but I think I need to learn that you can only have so many weird samples in one pack.
>>6
I tracked only chiptunes before I joined hastycompo, and I had some expirience with that sort of samples. As a result, tracking with hc05-samplepack was just pure fun and joy without any need to strain myself.
Also, baby duck syndrome.
I can understand that, I mean that's a big part of the reason Schism is still used by a lot of people.
Anyhow I'll make sure to at least have another chip pack soon.
I also have a soft spot for samplepack #5. I would happy with another chip-tune samplepack.
I also liked #9, even though I didn't compete in that one. I like "acoustic" sounding samples. I used a fair number of them in my bonus round entry.
Any thoughts for how another chip pack would work? I like themes, but I'm fine to just throw together a bunch of chip samples. Don't know about restrictions though; past experience has shown that results are fairer when people are all on the same footing, so suggested/optional limitations are not that worthwhile.
>>10
How about a pack that's just one (non-chip) sample which you're suppossed to slice and chip yourself?
>>11 That is a cool idea. Maybe a bit like this compo, except limit the editing tools, and allow/encourage chip sample loops.
I'd definitely be up for it :)
My least favorite samples of the bunch are those rap vocal samples that I've been seeing. Not to mention I sometimes find these pitifully easy to just lazily attach it to a drumbeat (especially when all I have to do is adjust the speed to get it right... or at least somewhat right). My entry for Hasty Compo 5 demonstrates that.
Pretty sure those are the only two, unless you count the weird thing in HC02. (Did you mean your HC07 entry? the kid's math-rap.)
How do you feel about the other speech samples?
Eh, they're OK. Some of them I wouldn't probably use, but they're OK.
OK, I also posted this on Renoise forum but I'm curious about your guys' opinions too...
Currently I am planning on reworking some of my older songs going back as far as 1998. I don't plan on changing very much if any of the original tracking. I just plan on cleaning up the mix so it sounds better than the original (using the skills I have developed since then), but still stays true to it musically.
Once these are finally finished, I'm trying to figure out what to actually label these songs as.
Technically in my opinion, they are a "Remix", since I am re-doing the mixing of the song. However as we all know, "remix" especially in electronic music brings to mind something different than the original, often in a different genre and lots of changes. So I'd like to avoid this term if possible, since most people will probably not understand and think that there is an original which is significantly different than what they are currently hearing.
What I am doing is not a "Remaster" either though, since mastering is essentially bringing up the levels for final airplay or CD/vinyl release. I may do or have someone do mastering in addition to the mixing, but since most of the tracks weren't ever mastered in the first place, I'm really not "re-mastering" them either.
organic io, I'd be interested to hear your opinions about Psycle/Buzz as compared to Renoise. It seemed to me people often go in the opposite direction - start with Psycle as it's free so a no loss situation to start playing around in, and then if someone likes tracking and trackers then they move on to Renoise because it's more polished.
Something i always liked about buzz/psycle is the machine routing paradigm - a great way to mash up all kinds of effects. Although to be honest I really enjoyed taking this hasty 12 samplepack and throwing something together in sunvox, with very minimal effects - mostly just samples and sequencing :)
I compiled Neil after seeing it mentioned here and it's awesome. Machine routing and a great multi-track sequencer - very impressed. Although it's a bit weird/awesome using it as my name is Neil.. :P 68k, from first glance python+gtk is used for the GUI, which hooks into libzzub (c++) for audio backend.
Hey hexmode... I'll definitely keep you updated. I tried to run Buzz and Psycle last night in my desktop Ubuntu 12.04 config, had trouble getting Buzz to launch, and couldn't get Psycle to work with sound yet.
This morning I did a google search for "Psycle Linux" and found Qpsycle and noticed that you had uploaded some screenshots
http://psycle.free.fr/mutilus/qpsycle/
vst is not overrated though. I will not be satisfied until I can find a modular tracker which runs in Linux and has windows vst support :)
Interesting thing I just found though... Buzé
http://batman.no/buze/
Why have I never heard of this before? It looks like it's actively updated. Very promising
hm, I went a little crazy tonight and tried:
Buzé
Aodix
Berotracker
Buzzle
Frinika
Nakalyne
svartracker
All with no luck with much stability in Linux.
It is possible that I will actually run Windows primarily on this new computer.
If VSTs are that important to you, then yeah, I'd recommend going with Windows.
Here's the thing though: Reaper runs GREAT in Wine and runs practically every vst I throw at it.
hey io
when i run psycle i run it in wine, and never encountered any problems with VSTs (although i don't have a lot of them.)
what problem did you have? i'd suggest posting at psycle.pastnotecut.org, should be able to help you out. one main thing i noticed with latest version of psycle in wine, set the number of cores used to be 1 - crashes for me otherwise.
yeah qpsycle is not a finished thing, it tanked when i got a full-time job and a girlfriend, and that was the end of free time back then.. :P few murmurings from time to time but never picked up by anyone really.
Hey Hexmode. I can't really remember specifically, with regular Psycle, it launched but I think I couldn't get it to have any audio output.
I usually do things through JACK with WineASIO. How do you have your sound configured?
Basically I ran all those programs on my current desktop trying to see if one or more of them would automatigically work with little to no configuration. When I get the laptop is when I'll dig deeper to actually troubleshoot getting things work.
But from what you're saying it sounds like I'll have a good chance at Psycle.
Sound Driver -> DirectSound Output
Audio thread -> 1
Configure...
Device: Primary Sound Driver
That's on Ubuntu 12.10 with a crappy on-board Intel card. psycle/wine's worked ok for me for a long time on various distros through the ages so it should work for you somehow. However yeah never tried with jack or wineasio. low latency has never been necessary for me to me so not investigated.. if you ping jaz or shadowbane on psycle forums they will be able to help i'd think.
For troubleshooting Wine programs you should include/compare Wine versions. Also I don't know what version of libpng Ubuntu uses but I've found that since my distro (Arch) upgraded to libpng15 I've had more trouble with Wine in general, especially with VST plugins.
Cool. What linux sound driver do you use? ALSA or something else?
If I can't get it to work with ALSA/jack/wineasio it won't ruin everything. I can still try to setup a wine config to use OSS and see if it will work that way with the settings you use. I've done that before to get sound to work in certain games when it wouldn't work on ALSA
http://compo.quikphix.org/11/hc11samp.zip
Round 11 sample pack is up, a little early. Due Nov 26th.
It is a difficult pack. If you find it completely unusable, check back Saturday for a supplemental pack made of edits from the main sample pack.
On that note, do not be afraid to get creative with sample editing here, should you feel inspired.
>>49 Mine is an Asus eee 1000HE. For what it is, I have zero complaints.
Both those sound like a dream to me :)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/330835902052?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 <—- This is pretty much similar, but with 2GB of RAM and a custom Linux distro for music. Seems like a great deal for $75. Maybe one day :)
"Indamixx" sounds pretty sketchy for a computer name. But it does seem to have a lot of good reviews on the web.
OK, results are up. No big surprise as to the winner here:
http://compo.quikphix.org/11/result11.txt
I'll accept votes from Storlek any time in the next week or so, should he get a moment to catch his breath.
No one has said anything about timing for round 12, so I've picked Dec 14 - Jan 2nd for tracking. I hope people will be around and interested. If that doesn't work at all, speak up now!
I think I'll pass next round. Got kinda busy and tired of tracking.
The timing for round #12 is smack in the middle of the holiday season. It means I could either have a lot of time to track or very little ;) Let's just see what happens.
thanks for the feedback. i don't like my track after listening to all the other entries. good work everyone!. i enjoyed them all and it was difficult for me to make a descision. i like those experimental tunes very much. my track is in mono, yes. I didn't take the time to pan the instruments but i just wanted to finish the track. Usually i start early arranging samples and setting up basic patterns but then end up finishing the whole thing a couple of hours before the deadline. i can set up a stereo version, even a live version, but are you really interested in dumb xm flies techno? drop a line if you need a comb or a haircut or tp for your linguist. —
>>58 I for one am surely interested in dumb xm techno.
Anyhow a rushed track is always better than none.
Just write me off. There's too much other stuff I have to do.
Quick survey: When I write René's name with the accent, e.g. in the vote form or at http://compo.quikphix.org/bonus1/resultx1.txt , where do you guys see é (an e with an accent) and where do you see é (capital A with a tilde plus a copyright symbol) ?
... I take that back, .txt files here do get a UTF-8 header.
>>2 I don't think so. I suspected it was something like that.
For the vote form, I imagine it depends on what people's text editors are expecting, since the file is included in a zip. So I'm curious who pulls it up as UTF-8 and who gets something else.
This one: http://compo.quikphix.org/bonus1/resultx1.txt has René. The voteform included in the zip file has the é, but screws up the carriage returns when I open it in Notepad.
I usually spell my name online without the accent on the e, just to avoid stuff like this.
Notepad seems to be the only thing that actually handles the é correctly on Windows. Even with a byte order mark, everything else I've tried screws it up.
Now, if you convert the file to UTF-16, it does show the é, but then nothing on Linux will handle the file right. Also, UTF-16 is dumb :P
Firefox shows the é on the web form.
Notepad shows the é, Wordpad shows the é.
I have a sweet program installed here at work called TextPad which also shows the é properly. And the carriage returns are not messed up too :)
Textpad wins :)
The carriage returns are messed up because I somehow saved the file with only unix LF as opposed to CR+LF. I've got a bunch of template files all saved with Windows line endings but I guess something helpfully converted it...
Anyhow I guess I'll start adding a BOM to the results file, but it looks like (when I do everything properly) the zipped text files display as intended.
>I usually spell my name online without the accent on the e, just to avoid stuff like this.
Sorry for singling you out! I'm interested in the general case, your name just happens to be the best example right now.
>>8
The byte order mark doesn't seem to help, though. The programs that aren't handling Unicode right are also failing at recognizing it.
>>9 I mean just for the website. i.e. http://compo.quikphix.org/bonus1/resultx1.txt should now display the accent properly. (Reload if needed; there should be a blank line at the top.)
Yeah it works!!!! :)
